My discs are jumping, what can I do about this?

Discs jump for many reasons. Optical pickup assembly blocks (the laser bit)
are very delicate and prefer, unless specially manufactured for a specific
purpose, to remain level and vibration free. Vibration sources include nearby
speakers (including the ones in your TV), loose floorboards, heavy nearby
walking etc.
There is also the possibilty that the disc is dirty. DVD's are much more
sensitive to fingerprints than audio cd's and should be kept as clean as
possible. Never clean in a round and round motion, this will probably ruin
the disc.
Your Optical pickup assembly lens could be dirty. If you fell you have to
clean your optic then always use a good quality lens cleaner specifically
designed for DVD players. Unfortunately, if you are a smoker, you may find
it difficult to clean your optic in this way as the components of the smoke
stick themselves to the lens which cannot be brushed off. A professional
should clean the pickup lens manually. This should never be attempted by
unqualified people.
Your player could be overheating. Please see
here.
